Healthy Habits for College Students (Part 1)
I want to help you succeed while in college, living the abundant life Jesus called us to live (
First, many think they have it all figured out when they leave high school. They do not seem to be teachable. Hopefully you are not in this category. One way to grow is to listen more than you talk. College can be an exciting place but also a challenging place with various relationships. Do not express all of your opinions too quickly. You could get hurt and in trouble with friends, professors, church leaders, parents and others. God gave us two ears and one mouth. I would suggest that you listen more than you talk so you remain teachable.
How is your drink?
Second, this might be hard to believe, but many in college forget to have healthy fun. Certainly you are in college to get an education and prepare to get a job and bring home some cash to pay off your college debt; but these years should be fun, too. Take time to have the time of your life with friends. Laugh tons. Take a mental break from the books. Enjoy God's creation. Take a nap in a hammock. Sing in the middle of a forest. Within God's given boundaries, enjoy this season of your life.
Third, there are so many in the college envoirment who spend so much time at the library with the books and in the cafeteria with the food that something begins to happen. Do you know what it is? The pounds begin to build. Be sure to exercise on a regular basis. It relieves stress, clears your mind and keeps the freshman-15 off. Take time to workout. Start the habit if you haven't already.
Is your drink fat-free?
Fourth, many who leave high school and land in college leave their faith and morals at home. Be intentional; be sure to mark healthy boundaries with God's help. Stay close to Him by spending time in the Bible on a daily basis. Never stop talking to God. Do not put yourself in compromising physical, mental or spiritual positions. In college, you will be tempted from every angle. Don't give in. Choose to live a clean life before God so you do not have any regrets later.
Fifth, this might seem obvious, but run away from drugs. Just because you are a follower of Jesus does not stop the temptations from coming your way even at a Christian college. Be careful. Be on guard. As with your morals and values, do not put yourself in a compromising position. Drugs of all types--alcohol, prescription drugs and harder types--are dangerous and addictive. Many think they can control their drug use but find out it controls them. Stear clear and run away from them, and help others do the same. You will be happy you did.
